Bluntly Grabbing the Fruits and Falling in Love with Hakka Dishes

Mile High Cafe Leisure Farm, a.k.a Yunyejuyi, is an interesting name. The name “Yun”, meaning cloud, is self explanatory that it is a good place to watch the clouds. This store is right on Datong Highway with a commanding view to see Zhuolan Township. The store is eye catching and offers easy and convenient parking, in addition, its dishes are delicious that attract many visitors. But before having meals, go grab fruits first.

Fruits are not in the buffet; the visitors have to bring the buckets to pick fruits in the garden. The garden in Yunyejuyi applies “wildlife friendly farming”, with appeals of no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers and no weeding season to grow the crops and produces. Such farming shows Yunyejuyi’s love of the land. No pesticides imply more weeds. A dude taking care of the farming came bring us to the path in the grass and the pear tree is hidden behind.

The tree is right under our nose hanging with pears, so why do we have to grab them? That is because pesticide free farming allows birds and worms to eat fruits so the production is only 30% of those in conventional farming and the other 70% is shared with the nature.

It is alright if you don’t recognize the fruits on the trees because the dude farmer will patiently introduce them. He picked a pear and handed it to me while he was talking. If it were grown by conventional farming, I would be afraid that every bite of the fruit would accompany pesticide.

Dishes in Yunyejuyi are homemade creativity, integrating hakka flavor and local gingers. “The Delicious Ginger Chicken” is a savory dish. The spicy ginger mixed in the chicken soup is really appetizing. “Flying Clouds”, combining Hakka kuih and soup of salty glue pudding and the aromatic flavor of minced pork together with the chewy noodles, is the signature dish. Ginger milk and ginger coffee are the special local drinks that are highly recommended.
