Nostalgic southern Taiwan—Rediscovering Kenting

Summer means going to the beach and going to the beach means going to Kenting. With blue skies, beaches, ocean, and bikinis, Kenting is like another country. But did you know there's a new way to explore Kenting? Put on your sandals and get ready for a vacation!

Beach fun by day and at night
Kenting is synonymous with the tropical vacation movie Cape No. 7. While the movie is several years old, the hotel and Hengchun Old Town depicted are still popular tourist attractions. Even now there are tour buses that pass by the main character Aga's house. Most of the beaches in Taiwan are rocky or mud flats, but Kenting boasts one of the few pristine beaches. The crystal clear waters here also make it the perfect place to vacation in summer. There are numerous water activities, including surfing, kayaking, and sailing. Kids can also enjoy making sand castles, but be sure to stay on the beaches with life guards to ensure safety.

Unlike the sweltering days, at night the beaches are the perfect quiet place to take in the moon and the stars. The atmosphere at night is much more enchanting than the crowds during the day. You'll be surrounded by tiny sand crabs scurrying around the beach at up to 3.8 meters per second. Bury them in sand and they won’t move an inch because they'll think you've disappeared! There are also hermit crabs that come out to feed at night. Take your children out to find all kinds of things on the beach at night for surprises and great memories!

Stay at the Fujianese style Kenting Youth Activity Center Hostel
The perfect place to stay on this nostalgic vacation is the Kenting Youth Activity Center Hostel located just off the main road. At the time the activity center was built, there were only a few small shops and hotels nearby; walking along the street with the occasional car and sky full of stars is already a thing of the past. The Kenting Youth Activity Center was the most popular place to stay during the heyday of the China Youth Corps. Just next to Frog Rock Marine Park, the center was designed by Dr. Han Pao-teh and has classical Fujianese style architecture and is itself a landmark in the national park.

The swaying trees and beautiful lily pond inside the elegant courtyard paint an otherworldly scene. The seven main buildings all have different architectures, including sanhe yuan, sanluo yuan, and sihe yuan, and are given surnames, such as Chen and Lin, so that visitors can understand the history behind the names. The play courtyards have stilts and room for three-legged races so that you can share your memories with your kids.
